Sloppy Joe's 16th Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell

On December 31, 2008 Sloppy Joe's will host its 16th Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell. Anything goes New Year's Eve in Key West on Duval Street.

You'll find people all decked out for the midnight celebration, and folks still in their bathing suits and flip flops when the Conch Shell drops from the roof of Sloppy Joe's Bar.

The idea and implementation of the New Year's Eve Dropping of the Conch Shell is that of local artist Tobias McGregor. In 1993, McGregor approach Sloppy Joe's management about the New Year's Eve plan. "Before the dropping of the Conch Shell, everyone would just wonder around Duval Street, celebrating the New Year when their watches read midnight. The crowd was just not in sync," said McGregor.

The initial Conch Shell was rigged on a frame, the shell was lowered manually, and timed by watch, or by looking across the street into a window and watching the count down in Times Square on someone's TV. McGregor said, "the Queen Conch has come along way since the early years, and the crowd at the corner of Duval and Greene expects more each year. The new Conch Shell with special effects will be sure to please the crowds gathered below."

The crowd starts to gather on the street around 10:00pm as Sloppy Joe's rooftop host entertains the crowd and everyone dances, catches beads and waits for the count down clock to begin. As midnight strikes and the Conch Shell is lowered confetti, streamers and lights will fill the sky.

Inside "The Crew" will take the stage at 10:00pm to celebrate in 2009!

Kenny's Keg Gets
Sloppy In Key West

Final Show at Historic Sloppy Joe's

Overflow Closes Duval
and Adjacent Streets

Key West: Coming off 3000 people on the beach in Panama City, Florida, it's hard to imagine that one of Kenny Chesney's whirlwind, no set list commando Keg In The Closet shows could be any crazier, but somehow the man who lives his life in flip-flops figured out how to turn one of America's most laidback party destinations upside down.

"It was insane," Chesney croaked the next morning over pancakes. "People started lining up at 4 a.m. — and at 10 a.m. when Sloppy Joe's opened, they went straight to capacity and stayed there, which was great. I guess what no one was counting on was Duval Street and the adjacent street getting so clogged with people that they'd have to be shut down."

Kenny Chesney

Chesney, who is waist deep in preparations for this year's Poets & Pirates Tour, believes in giving people what they came for. After that kind of wait and loyalty, especially for the folks standing in the sun all day, waiting for the 5:30 kick-off, the 3-time and current Country Music Association and reigning three-in-a-row Academy of Country Music Entertainer of the Year showed how he earns that title.

"Our record for the longest we've ever played," says the guy getting ready to hit 14 NFL Stadiums this summer, "is 4 hours and 15 minutes at Sammy Hagar's birthday party in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico... and that was pretty brutal. But we got on Sloppy Joe's stage, and those people were so right there with us, it was 10:00pm or a little after when we got done... Four-and-a-half hours...!

"And you know we played absolutely every song we know, and a few we really didn't. We got into Dave Matthews' 'Where Are You Going?' and suddenly I realized: I only think I know that song. There were a buncha lyrics I didn't know, but it's okay because the crowd did and they were actually really good singers."

Kenny Chesney

They weren't the only good singers. On hand for the mayhem was CMA Song of the Year winner Paul Overstreet, who climbed onstage for "Diggin' Up Bones" and a duet on "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy." Scotty Emerick also showed up: in addition to singing his "I Love This Bar," he joined Chesney for the Be As You Are: Songs From An Old Blue Chair closer 'Soul of A Sailor," which he co-wrote on Chesney's boat.

That boat's getting a lot of work. Immediately following the show, everyone adjourned to where it was docked for a party to commemorate the close of the 5th annual Keg In The Closet. More abbreviated than other years and at least one date almost cancelled because of internet leaks creating security concerns, it's back to gearing up for the big, big show with lighting rigs, video screens and a stage that gives everyone plenty of room to run around.

"These shows are tight, cramped, sound sketchy and we have more fun doing 'em," Chesney reports. "You know, it's not us at our best in a lotta ways, but it's the reason people fall in love with music to begin with. If you start there, anywhere you go is gonna be pretty awful good."

Key West, FL -
It was September 8, 1978 when Sidney Snelgrove and the late Jim Mayer became owners of the world-famous watering hole "Sloppy Joe’s Bar." The Snelgrove and Mayer families have kept the party going at the corner of Duval and Greene since then.

Jean Klausing came on board that same day, and spent over twenty three years as General Manager. Klausing still acts as General Manager Emeritus.

The bar began with the end of prohibition in 1933, and was called the Blind Pig, before being renamed Sloppy Joe's. On May 5, 1937 Sloppy Joe's move to its current location.
